What is Oil Pulling?

Oil Pulling involves taking a portion of coconut oil and swishing it around in your mouth for 15-20mins.

History of Oil Pulling

Oil Pulling has been used for more than 3000 years according to ancient Indian Ayurveda medical practices.

Benefits of Oil Pulling*

As you may have noticed I have put a * next to the heading above.   In case you didn’t know when a * appears next to a word, it acts as a DISCLAIMER that you need to be aware of.   I have used the * because the benefits that I have listed below have not been scientifically or clinically proven to be correct or false.

HOWEVER, just because something is or is not clinically proven, doesn’t necessarily mean that it will or will not work either!  In fact, if you google “Oil Pulling” and you read many of the websites that DO NOT endorse this practice – you will quickly notice that those websites seem to be promoting a COMMERCIALLY MANUFACTURED DENTAL PRODUCT instead.  That doesn’t mean you should ignore all clinical or scientific study reports – I am just saying always make sure you do your own research and consider consulting your own professional health practitioner before deciding whether Oil Pulling is safe for you.

Just remember, it costs a lot of money to do a scientific and clinical study.  Why would a company pay to do a clinical study if they are endorsing a naturally occuring substance (like coconut oil!) = The answer is they wouldn’t – because it would be hard for the company paying for the study or test to make MONEY from the results because anyone who sold or supplied coconut oil could use the findings of the results!

  • Help with Bad Breath:   Bad Breath can be caused by a number of factors – but the treatment of bad breath has traditionally involved using an anti-bacterial mouth wash.  This is because bad breath is caused by the build up of harmful bacterial in the mouth, tongue, teeth, cheeks etc.  Oil Pulling may help to reduce the amount of harmful bacteria in the mouth.

  • Prevent Plague Build Up:   Oil Pulling reduces the amount of harmful bacteria in the mouth.    The harmful bacteria create a biofilm (also known as plague) around your teeth. An Plague build up leads to bad breath, gum inflammation, gingivitis and cavities.

  • Improve Gum Health:  The bacteria which cause a build up of plaque are also the same bacteria which cause of gingivitis.  Gingivitis is a bacterial infection of the gums which can lead to bleeding and inflammation.Oil Pulling with an oil containing anti-inflammatory properties is thought to offer favourable outcomes for your gum health!

  • Teeth Whitening:   The idea is that Oil Pulling helps to reduce the build up of plague on your teeth – which helps to brighten and whiten your teeth.

  • Natural:   If you take a look at the list of ingredients in mouth washes you will probably ask yourself WHY are you putting that substance into your mouth!  However, the same can be said for oil pulling UNLESS you make sure that the oil that you are using is ORGANIC and UNREFINED.

Some of the Benefits of Oil Pulling that I have seen when I did my own research:
  • Teeth Whitening:  Initially I didn’t believe this point – but I actually did notice my teeth started to appear WHITER and BRIGHTER after only 2 days of Oil Pulling with Coconut Oil.   Now – some websites will tell you that you need to use bleech, peroxide or baking soda to whiten your teeth, and they also say that there is NO CLINICAL EVIDENCE that Oil Pulling can help you to whiten your teeth.  My response:  It worked for me!

  • Foods Taste Better:  After the first time that I tried Oil Pulling = I noticed foods tasted so much better!  Sweet foods tasted BOLDER, Salty foods tasted SALTIER, Creamier foods tasted SMOOTHER.  This is because Oil Pulling helps to cleanse your tongue – and I am a food-aholic – so to me this is an AMAZING benefit!

  • Flossing was easier:  I have not always been the best at remembering to floss (yuk I know) but I am being honest with you.   Normally I really have to floss repeatedly to dislodge built up plague and food that has become wedged inbetween my teeth.  However, I found flossing after Oil Pulling to be enormously easier!

What type of oil is recommended?

Coconut Oil is the recommended oil based on my research on Oil Pulling.

However, importantly you should aim for coconut oil that is:

  1. Organic, and
  2. Unrefined

The recommendations is to use 1 tablespoon of coconut oil – and although people constantly tell me that I have a BIG MOUTH – there was NO WAY I could fit 1 tablespoon of coconut in my mouth!  So I started with a teaspoon to begin with.

How long should you oil pull?

According to Auyrvedic medical sources you should aim to Oil Pull for between 15-20mins.

It is recommended to do it first thing in the morning when you wake up.

Trust me – so far I am a massive fan – your breaky will taste 1000 times better!

Oil Pulling Protocol (that I followed!)

The protocol I followed was:

  1. Oil Pulling (using Organic and Unrefined Coconut Oil) for 15-20mins
  2. Spit out (don’t swallow it or you will be ingesting all the HARMFUL bacteria that you have collected in the oil!)  Also, spit it out into a tissue and put in the trash can!  If you spit it down the drain you risk the oil re-solidifying and clogging your  pipes!
  3. Gargle with Salt + Warm Water for 30 seconds (this can be spit down the drain though)
  4. Brush Teeth thoroughly using a quality tooth paste
  5. Floss
  6. Final Rinse with fresh water
In Summary:

So far I have only done one Oil Pulling session – but I am really really impressed!  I am going to continue to read, review and research Oil Pulling over the coming days, and I will share with you my observations & findings as my Oil Pulling trial continues.

Have you tried Oil Pulling?  If so, what did you find?  Please share your experiences with me!
